ARTIST STATEMENT
My interest lies in my material obsessions: my need to own and have things. I have an ongoing curiosity about the life-line of the things I own; from being sentimental objects to things that are easily disposable. This stems from my habit of overconsumption and my need to keep everything I’ve ever owned. As an inter-generational trait, I study hoarding from learning my family history as well as the effects of immigration and the proof of success through consumption. I observe my own attachments to these objects and how these objects can depict a false narrative of my functionality as a living human being.
I aim to aestheticize and create a spectacle with these things, and make them seductive and alluring to the eye. I often use vibrant colours and patterns that are influenced by consumerist girlhood aesthetics, camp, and the romanticization of clutter. I use the imagery of accessory items such as bags, clothes, and collectables to convey “girl” aesthetics. My works take in the personalization of an object and push them towards maximalist and excessive forms.
Being an interdisciplinary artist, my work is often translated or created using multiple mediums, which goes through an over-processed journey to its end result. I primarily work with painting and photo-manipulation, but it intersects with video, performance, design and textiles. My work goes back and forth from analog and digital, leaning towards the artificial imagery of digital practices to rob an object of its original state, pushing the object into abstraction. I depict the transformations of an object through breaking it down and recreating it constantly through using the processes of different mediums. There is no definite end to this process and I continue to use and reuse past subjects and works. I approach every material I use as a ready-made that can be molded into a painterly, decorative and seductive object of no use.
